Artist's Description

Tornado approaching road. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). The largest tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms called supercells. Large tornadoes can be hundreds of metres across, with wind speeds of hundreds of kilometres an hour. This tornado is approaching Interstate-70 near Quinter, Kansas, USA, on 23 May 2008. Less than a minute after this photo was taken, the tornado crossed the road, tossing a car more than 90 metres, seriously injuring the driver.
