Description
Surgeon's instrument sets. These sets of surgeon's instruments are from England and date from about 1850. The right-hand set includes a tourniquet, forceps, scissors, amputation instruments including a bone saw, knives and scalpels, a trephine for making a hole in the skull when treating head injuries, probes and catheters. The left-hand set consists of tourniquet and amputation instruments. Anaesthesia and antiseptic surgical techniques were not introduced until the second half of the 19th century. Their advent allowed the development of more refined surgical techniques and reduced infection, and surgery survival rates greatly improved.
