Artist's Description

Stomach lining. Light micrograph of a section through the lining of the stomach, known as the mucosa. The upper layer of cells (dark purple) is the folded glandular mucosa, with gastric pits between the cells. The gastric pits open into the digestive lumen (white) and secrete digestive acids to break down food in the stomach. Beneath the glandular mucosa is the submucosa (yellow) which contains blood vessels, lymph and nerves.
