Description
Sterkfontein cave excavation. Sterkfontein, in South Africa, is the richest site in the world for the discovery of early hominids, with around 500 individuals found as of 2006, and excavations still continuing. Many of the finds have been of Australopithecus africanus, an ancestor of modern humans that lived between 3.3 and 2.4 million years ago.
