Description
Staphylococcus toxins research. Chemist and bioscience technician studying toxins produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium can cause skin infections, respiratory disease, and food poisoning. After extracting staphylococcal toxin from food samples, the researchers look for replication of spleen cells in culture. Replication is a measure of the amount of biologically active toxin. It is these toxins that can cause severe conditions such as toxic shock syndrome and scalded-skin syndrome. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the US Department of Agriculture. Photographed in the USA.
