Description
St. Louis encephalitis virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) particles (Flavivirus sp., green) in the salivary gland of a mosquito. The virus is an arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) and is transmitted to humans and other mammals from infected birds through the bite of a mosquito (Culex sp.) vector. Symptoms in humans range from mild flu-like symptoms to inflammation of the brain, coma, and death. The virus was first discovered in 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
