Artist's Description
Small intestine. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a mammalian small intestine. The tissue has been injected with blue dye to show the blood capillaries. The intestine's internal lining is the upper surface of this section, with finger-shaped villi increasing the surface area for the absorption of nutrients during digestion. The dye shows the extensive capillary networks near the surface of each villus. It is these capillaries that take up the nutrients during digestion. This tissue sample is from the part of the small intestine called the ileum. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
