Artist's Description
Safety training at CERN. Researcher training in safety procedures in a mock-up of the tunnel of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The self-rescue mask (on man's belt) is a personal breathing apparatus for use in oxygen deficiency hazard (ODH) situations. More than 3500 people have trained on this course (introduced in 2009). The course is mandatory for access to the LHC tunnel, the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) tunnel, the underground CNGS (CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso) facilities and the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) cavern. Photographed on 30 April 2014.
