Description
Richard Friedrich Johannes Pfeiffer (1858-1945), German physician and bacteriologist. Pfeiffer trained in medicine and specialised in bacteriology. At the age of 29 in 1887, he began work with pioneering microbiologist Robert Koch in Berlin. Pfeiffer's work included identifying the process of bacteriolysis and the role of bacterial endotoxins. Pfeiffer also pioneered typhoid vaccinations. From 1899 to 1909 he was a professor at the University of Konigsberg, and then professor at the University of Breslau from 1909 to 1925, retiring to emeritus status that year. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1928.
