Description
Henry Maudslay. Portrait of British mechanical engineer and inventor, Henry Maudslay (1771-1831). Born near London, Maudslay was apprenticed to the locksmith Joseph Bramah where he learned about precision metalwork. He worked his way up to foreman and later set up his own business. Over a period of 30 years he invented machinery that was to play an important role in the Industrial Revolution. Many of his principles and techniques helped establish Britain as a major industrial producer. Among his inventions was the screw- cutting lathe; machines for printing cloth, desalinating seawater, and in making measurements accurate to one ten-thousandth of an inch.
