Animal space research. A pigtail monkey (Macaque nemestrina), of the type used by NASA for Biosatellite flights. These monkeys were used to study the effects of weightlessness on primate nervous and cardiovascular systems. Only one pigtail monkey was ever flown, Bonny" on Bios-3. Bonny had to earn his food by pushing buttons for 15 minutes at a time. Bonny was more concerned by the 26 sensors implanted in his body (including six in the brain and one in each eye), and refused to eat or drink. The $96 million mission was terminated after nine of the planned 30 days. Public outrage at such cruelty ended the programme. Bonny died a few days later."
