Description
Physiology researchers. From left, in a laboratory: Australian physiologist Harold Whitridge Davies (1894-1946); British physiologist John Burdon Sanderson (J.B.S. or 'Jack') Haldane (1892-1964); and his father Scottish physiologist John Scott Haldane (1860-1936). Davies, research assistant to Haldane Sr in 1920, later worked at Edinburgh and Leeds before returning to Australia in 1930. Jack Haldane taught biochemistry at Cambridge from 1922 to 1932, while his father was a fellow at Oxford from 1901. John Haldane's research (sometimes with his son) had included discovering the Haldane effect relating to haemoglobin and blood gases.
