Description

Ostrich. The head of a female ostrich (Struthio camelus). The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, reaching heights of 2.5 metres and weights of 130 kilograms. It is also the only bird to have two toes (instead of the usual three). The ostrich is native to Africa, where it inhabits plains and savannahs, feeding on plants and seeds. The female is a greyish brown colour, while the male is black and white. Although flightless, when threatened the ostrich can run at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour, making it the fastest bird on land.
