Description
Healthy brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a section through a human brain in side (sagittal) view. The front of the brain is at left. Conscious brain activity occurs in the highly-folded cerebrum (upper centre), the main part of the brain. The triangular cerebellum (lower right) coordinates movement, as well as being involved with balance and posture. To its left is the brainstem (lower centre), which controls automatic processes such as breathing. MRI scanning creates slice images through the body using radio waves and a powerful magnetic field. It is useful for detecting brain tumours and cancer.
