Description
Monument to the Discoveries, Lisbon, Portugal, from across a marina. This monument commemorates the voyages of exploration made from here by Portuguese sailors and navigators, such as Vasco da Gama's voyage to India in 1497-9. These voyages took place in the 15th and 16th centuries during what is now called the Age of Discovery. The monument, built in concrete in 1960, is located on the banks of the Tagus River. It is 52 metres high and carved in the shape of a ship's prow, with statues of the kings, explorers, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries of that era.
