Description
Mating soldier beetles, Cantharis cryptica, seen here on the stinging nettle plant, Urtica dioica. The male beetle hangs in the air while the female remains firmly attached to the leaf. Soldier beetles are predatory. They hang around flowers waiting for other insects coming to feed on nectar and pollen. Their larvae feed on earthworms.
