Description
Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein', 1831 edition title page. The novel 'Frankenstein' was published in 1818 by English author Mary Shelley (1797-1851). It tells the story of a scientist (Victor Frankenstein) creating new life in the form of a humanoid creature. This illustration shows Frankenstein departing his childhood home and his lover and future wife Elizabeth. Leaving home to study at university, and grief-stricken by his mother's recent death, Frankenstein engages in experiments that lead to the creation of his 'monster' (see C038/2641). Shelley's novel, subtitled 'The Modern Prometheus', was an immediate success, with the story retold and republished ever since. This engraving is by William Chevalier after an artwork by Theodor von Holst.
