Description
Map of Japan. 18th-century map of the islands of Japan, with Korea (dark yellow) and parts of China (red and green, left) and Russia (light yellow). Part of Sakhalin (an island, but shown incorrectly as part of the mainland) is shown under Japanese control. The main islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. To the south of Kyushu, the Ryukyu Islands form a chain arcing towards Taiwan. The geography is not exact due to errors by the map-makers. This map is titled 'Sangoku tsuran yochi rotei zenzu' and was made between 1785 and 1793 by Shihei Hayashi (1738-1793). Names and co-ordinates are given in Japanese characters.
