Artist's Description

Magnetic core memory. View of the magnetic core memory array once used in early computers. It consists of an array of rings of ferrite material strung on a grid of wires. Each ferrite ring or core is about one millimetre in diameter. Information is stored in the array by causing the direction of magnetisation of a core to be either clockwise or anticlockwise, corresponding to the binary digits one or zero. Information is input and output by electronic means, using the wire grid to read or write. Ferrite core memory has very limited capacity by computing standards, and has been superseded by semiconductor memory.
