Description
Light micrograph of a section of the human gastric mucosa, the internal lining of the stomach, showing the lower part of the gastric pits. The stomach mucosa synthesises and secretes digestive gastric juice, a watery mix of hydrochloric acid and the digestive enzyme pepsin. A thick coating of mucus prevents autodigestion. The gastric glands contain 3 main cell types: mucus secreting cells, covering the upper surface & lining the gastric pits; hydrochloric acid-secreting cells, located in the middle part of the gland; lastly, pepsin-secreting cells clustered at the base of the gland. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
