Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) leaf surface showing wax crystals, coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also seen are many closed stomata (holes). This herb is native to India and south-eastern Asia. It is used extensively in cooking for the lemony taste it imparts to dishes. Some types of lemon grass are also used in perfumes, in herbal medicine and in insect repellents. For a close-up of the surface crystals (tiny yellow specks) see image B745/0619.
