Description
Lemon balm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a lemon balm leaf (Melissa officinalis), showing hairs (trichomes) and an oil gland (globule at left). The hairs serve a protective function for the plant and reduce evaporation from the leaf. Lemon balm is both a herbal and medicinal plant used in perfumes, as a sedative and to treat headache and toothache. Magnification: x355 when printed 10 centimetres high.
