Artist's Description

Jacques Loeb (1859-1924), German-US physiologist, reading a book. Loeb carried out experiments on marine invertebrates, achieving artificial parthenogenesis of sea urchin eggs where chemical modification prompted development without fertilisation by sperm cells. He conducted these experiments at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. Photographed at MBL in 1921.
