Artist's Description

Icefish. Dorsal view of a young Antarctic icefish (Chaenocephalus aceratus). Icefish are found in the cold waters around Antarctica and southern South America. Their blood is transparent as it contains less than 10 percent haemoglobin. They absorb oxygen from the water directly through their scale-less skin. The oxygen is then dissolved in the blood plasma and transported throughout the body without the need for haemoglobin. This specimen was found at a depth of 500 metres, on the Bellingshausen Sea continental shelf, Antarctica.
