Description
Hyena skull (family: Hyaenidae, nocturnal scavengers & hunters of Africa), showing the strongly-constructed jaw & powerful teeth (teeth are used for chewing bone). The image of the hyena as a pure scavenger is incorrect. Hunting in packs the hyenas seize & kill their own prey: they are often driven off prey by lions, who are attracted to a kill by the laughing" sounds emitted by the bickering hyenas. The hyenas would then usually have to wait until the lion had finished eating before taking their turn. In addition to being able to crush bone, hyena teeth are used in seizing & bringing down prey by biting into the lower legs & flanks."
