Artist's Description
HMS Beagle, Straits of Magellan. Mount Sarmiento (2246 metres) is the peak in the background. This scene was recorded by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during the five years of the second survey voyage of HMS Beagle. They reached this part of Tierra del Fuego in June 1834 while surveying the straits. Indigenous people in boats are in the foreground. This artwork is the frontispiece to Darwin's 'Journal of Researches' (the 1890 John Murray first illustrated edition).
