Description
Historic drinking fountain. Person filling a bottle of water from one of the many water fountains in the historic centre of Lucca, Tuscany. Installed in 1822 by Maria Luisa di Borbone, Duchessa of Lucca, to provide a pure supply to the town, the fountains are still in use after more than 150 years. The system is now maintained by the local water authority who display the chemical characteristics of the water alongside each fountain. The water comes 3.25 kilometres from Monte Pisano via an aqueduct.
