Description
Hatchling yellow-spotted river turtle. One month old yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis uniflis). The egg tooth is still visible (small white area just under the nose). This is not a true tooth but a protrusion that is used by the turtle to tear through the egg's shell during hatching. It is shed shortly after birth. Yellow-spotted river turtles are one of the largest South American river turtles, growing up to 45 centimetres long and weighing up to 8 kilograms. Photographed at the Tiputini Biodiversity Research Station, Ecuador.
