Artist's Description

Great auk (Pinguinus impennis) egg. This is Canon Tristram's great auk egg, held at the Natural History Museum at Tring, UK. This flightless bird inhabited the north Atlantic, breeding on rocky islands. It became extinct in the 19th century, with the last sightings made in the 1840s.
