Description
Geothermal power station. Centrale di Farinello geothermal power station, in the Larderello region of Tuscany, Italy. This geothermal area has been used to generate electricity since 1913. It is one of the world's largest producers of geothermal energy. Hot granite rocks lie close to the surface, heating underground water to produce steam at high temperatures. The steam is channelled through pipes to numerous power stations. This one, constructed in 1995, has eight cooling towers and can generate 60 megawatts (MW) of power. It uses the AMIS system to reduce pollution from geothermal vapours such as hydrogen sulphide.
