Description
Galvanic apparatus by A. Gaiffe, complete with hand grips and metal brush applicator. This apparatus dates from around 1860, and originates from Paris, France. Galvanic apparatus was used in the historical medical discipline of 'galvanism', to cure nervous diseases. Galvanism is the therapeutic application of electric currents to the body to stimulate muscle contraction, it was a popular branch of quack medicine throughout the nineteenth century and its use continued into the 1900s. Galvanism takes its name from Italian physiologist, Luigi Galvani (1737-98) who discovered that electric currents could affect muscle activity in dissected animals. Today, the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues is known as electrophysiology.
