Fossil shark teeth. Specimens from Squalicorax pristodontus (top left), Cretolamna biauriculata (top right), Carcharias vincentii (bottom left) and Carcharias africana (bottom right). The variations in the structure of the teeth show the differences in diet amongst these sharks. Squalicorax pristodontus fed on large marine animals as well as bony fish, sea turtles and also scavenged the bodies of large land dinosaurs that ended up in the sea. The teeth are serrated to allow them to shear off large amounts of meat in each bite. The Cretolamna tooth is less robust although their diet was mixed whereas the Carcharias sp. teeth are more slender and curved (C. africana) showing an adaptation to a diet primarily of fish.
