Artist's Description

Fish scale, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These epidermal cells are from the surface of the embryo of a salmon. The small ridge-like folds (microplicae) are part of the plasma membrane and are thought to reduce friction. The larger pattern shows the shape of the skin cells. Imaged using a secondary electron (SE) detector. Magnification: x2000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
