Description
Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in orbit, computer artwork. This space observatory was formerly known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST. Fermi will study high-energy phenomena such as supermassive black holes and gamma ray bursts from a low Earth orbit. Some of the same processes that generate the gamma-ray emission (magenta) also produce high-energy neutrinos (white), particles that rarely interact with matter. Fermi was launched on 11th June 2008 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. It orbits Earth at an altitude of 550 kilometres.
