Artist's Description

Edward Murray East (1879-1938), US plant geneticist. East specialised in crop research, particularly hybrid forms of maize. He obtained his doctorate in 1907 from the University of Illinois. His early research at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station included tobacco and potato plants. Both he and George Shull developed hybrid maize as a viable crop. East worked at Harvard University from 1909, becoming a professor at the Bussey Institution. He became Professor of Genetics there in 1926. A supporter of eugenics, and author of a number of general books on science, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1925.
