Artist's Description
Coloured 3D composite computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans highlighting the anatomy of the middle and inner ear. The auditory canal, leading to the outer ear is at bottom left. The gold structures are the three bones of the middle ear; the malleus, incus and stapes. They mechanically transmit sounds from the eardrum to the inner ear. The inner ear consists of fluid-filled organs. They includes the cochlea (green), which translates the vibrations into electrical impulses that are carried to the brain by nerves, and the semi-circular canals (blue), which are responsible for balance. The two yellow structures are the chorda tympani nerve (thinner) and the facial nerve (thicker).
