Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). A common filarial nematode parasite of dogs, including cats and rarely in humans. The adult worms are large. Measuring up to 10 inches long, and they typically live in the dog's right heart and pulmonary artery. Female worms produce microfilariae that are found in the dog's blood and can be ingested by mosquitoes. The microfilariae mature into infective juveniles in the mosquito and the infection is transmitted to a new host when the mosquito feeds such as dogs and humans. Magnification x14 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
