Description
Cumulus clouds over Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia. These are cumulus mediocris (Cu med) clouds. Cumulus clouds often form at cold fronts where the advancing, cool air forces warm air upwards. It typically occurs at under 2000 metres altitude, with the mediocris variety having a moderate vertical extent. The desert landscape includes weathered limestone pinnacles formed by wind erosion over millions of years. Photographed in late afternoon in October.
