Artist's Description
Colon blood vessels. Light micrograph of a piece of the wall of a mammalian large intestine or colon. The colon tissue has been injected with a red dye (carmine) that has highlighted the arterioles and venules (small arteries and veins) and the network they form with the permeable capillaries. The capillaries provide an enormous surface area for one of the colon's functions, the absorption of water from the digestive tract following digestion. Magnification: x103 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
