Description

MODEL RELEASED. Cochlear implant being worn by a 7-year-old girl. This external component (microphone and sound processor) is worn on the ear. The lead at lower right takes the sound to the internal part of the device (not seen), which has been surgically placed on the skull under the skin. The internal component include a stimulator that converts the sound signal into electrical impulses sent to electrodes implanted in the cochlea, the organ of hearing. The implant allows those with hearing losses to regain a sense of hearing. Photographed in 2011.
