Artist's Description
Cholera prevention. Satirical artwork portraying a man's efforts to protect himself during an outbreak of cholera. Cholera is a bacterial infection of the intestines that was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. Chlorinated lime, smoke, herbs, tobacco, and protective footwear were all used. This artwork dates from 1832, and the caption (not shown) is attributed to the Austrian satirical writer Moritz Gottlieb Saphir (1795-1858). This version is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
