Description
Chevron barracuda. Divers with a school of chevron barracuda, Sphyraena sp. These fish congregate in schools numbering many thousands, seeking safety in numbers from predators such as tuna. The resulting wall of fast-moving silver and black stripes makes it difficult for a predator to focus on a single fish. Chevron barracuda are fast and voracious predators reaching lengths of over a metre. They have a large gape and sharp, grasping teeth. They inhabit tropical and subtropical coastal waters, and migrate in pursuit of schooling fish. Photographed off Palau Sipadan, Malaysia.
