Description
Supercomputer simulation of electron distribution in a single molecule of Buckminsterfullerene (C60) at 1000 K. The colours gold, purple & pink denote regions of increasingly greater electron density. In background, the atomic structure appears as 5- and 6-membered carbon rings arranged in the shape of a soccer ball. C60 was first postulated by Kroto et al in 1985. Intensive research has revealed a family of fullerenes of various shapes & sizes. Simulation & image: J. Bernholc, Q. -M. Zhang, J. -Y. Yi, C. Brabec, NC State University; T. Palmer, Cray Research, NC Supercomputing Centre, USA.
