Brain death test. Sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a 32-year-old woman in a coma being tested for brain death. Signs from this scan that indicate that the patient is brain dead include diffuse atrophy of the cerebral cortex, and a lack of vascularization (blood supply) to the cerebral hemispheres. This is a T1-weighted MRI scan, in medial section.
