Description
Asa Gray (1810-1888), US botanist. Gray is considered the most important botanist of the 19th Century. He was made Professor of Natural History at Harvard University, USA, in 1842 and published his 'Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States' in 1848. Gray travelled frequently to Europe to examine plant specimens. In 1851 he met Charles Darwin, who became a regular correspondent and Gray became the leading American advocate of Darwin's theory of natural selection.
