It was the winning design in a competition for a structure to be built for the London 2012 Olympics. Construction started in November 2010 and it was opened in May 2012. The design was by British sculptor Anish Kapoor. The steel (1400 tons) and the name was supplied by ArcelorMittal, a steel company chaired by Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal.
