Description
Antique garden sundial. This vertical sundial design was originally produced in the 17th century in the years before and after the English Civil War. Numerous copies of the design were made in bronze in later years. The Latin inscription reads: 'O beata solitudo, O sola beatitudo; mihi opidum carcer est, et solitudo paradisus. Et corona manuum opus nostrum. WH. Deus nobiscum. 1663. Vivat Carolus Secundus'. The inscription refers to blessed solitude, the royal crown, and WH (the Royalist MP William Hake), concluding 'God be with us'; 'Long live Charles II'. Photographed at Polesden Lacey, an Edwardian country house near Great Bookham, Surrey, UK.
