Description
Anthrax bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through lung tissue infected with anthrax bacteria (Bacillus anthracis, red). These Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria are highly pathogenic. Anthrax is primarily a livestock disease but can be transmitted to humans by contact with animal hair, hides or excrement. Infection of the lungs (pulmonary anthrax) is usually fatal, although prompt administration of antibiotics may effect a cure. Magnification: x850 at 6x7cm size.
