Description
Alfred Henry Sturtevant (1891-1970), US geneticist. Sturtevant worked on the genetics of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). He pioneered the technique of genetic mapping, and showed that genes were arranged in linear order on chromosomes. By 1928, Sturtevant had moved to the California Institute of Technology where he became a professor of genetics. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1965. Photographed at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA.
