Description
Alchemist at work. 19th-century satirical artwork titled 'Hocus Pocus or Searching for the Philosopher's Stone'. An alchemist and his assistant are using bellows to stoke a fire where a potion is being prepared for a love-struck couple (upper right). The book on the floor refers to the transmutation of metals, and animal heat and blood. It was thought that treating metals with the Philosopher's Stone would turn them into gold. This artwork, a hand-coloured lithograph on wove paper, was published in London in 1800. It is based on an original artwork by the English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827).
